Magical Dresden – the ball that enthrals

The motto for the 13th Semper Opera Ball in 2018 is: "Magical Dresden – having a ball" For Hans-Joachim Frey, creative director and first chairman of the ball, this is a message that embodies the spirit of Dresden: "Dresden is a magical place, packed with history that can be seen and felt time and again. The SemperOpernball in Dresden takes this atmosphere and uses it to bring people together, to create opportunities to meet, and moments of joy that stay with us and allow us to create something new." The city and the event have much to offer one another. It also signifies the gratitude of being able to provide the Semper Opera Ball with this home and how this fortuitous combination touches the hearts of guests and viewers near and far.

Programme

While the show on the theatre square starts at 6 p.m., onlookers must wait for the stars to tread the red carpet. At 7 p.m. the Semper Opera House opens its doors to the guests with the symbolic key ceremony. Until just before 9 p.m., guests and celebrities make their way through the paparazzi flashes into the famous opera house.

At 9 p.m. the opening gala kicks off a show full of highlights. Ceremonies recognising celebrities from the worlds of politics, sports, society and culture are punctuated by performances from artists from all corners of the world, and by current and future stars of classical music.

The ball is officially opened after the debutantes' dance. Just a few more waltzes stand between the viewers on the dance floor and the long-awaited midnight act on the ballroom stage.
